Wiltshire Roller Derby are one win away from winning the title after beating Wakey Wheeled Cats 205-145.

In what was one of the most intense games of the year so far, both teams started strongly.

A 30-second penalty to the Wakey jammer gave Wiltshire the chance to take the lead but injury to their own jammer saw Wakey sneak the early advantage.

For the rest of the first half the lead changed hands until some effective attacking from the Wiltshire blockers gave them a 77-53 lead at the break.

Wiltshire maintained the lead early in the second half until Wakey bounced back to take a six-point advantage.

Some great play by Wiltshire’s blockers saw them score a fantastic 23 points to regain the lead as they surged to a 205-145 success.

Wiltshire skipper Lauren Irvine enjoyed the battle against Wakey, saying: “This was a really tough bout – the Wakey team were very strong, their walls were tight and we exchanged game lead quite a few times in the first half.

“The team did an amazing job of pushing themselves and adapted well to the style of play, but even more importantly we stuck to playing ‘our’ game and this gave us the edge.

“Wakey were absolutely lovely opponents and though it was a challenging game, everyone really enjoyed themselves.

“I’m super proud of how well the team worked together and I’m really excited about our next game – the decider!”

Wiltshire will now bid to secure top spot in the British Championships Tier Five when they face current leaders Neath Port Talbot in the final game of the season.

Victory would not only give them top spot in the division but also secure promotions to Tier Four.
