Wiltshire Roller Derby Women begin their 2016 season next month when they host the first round of the British Roller Derby Championships.
After a challenging season in 2015, Wiltshire will compete in South West Division Tier Five where they will face Reaper Roller Derby (Swansea), Cheshire Hellcats Roller Derby, Wakey Wheeled Cats Roller Derby (Wakefield), Neath Port Talbot Roller Derby and Bedfordshire Roller Derby.
Last season, Wiltshire blooded a host of new rookie players which vice captain Nicola Botley believes could stand the team in good stead this season.
“We were extremely pleased to see so many of our beginners pass their minimum skills in the beginning of 2015 and join our travel team,” said Botley.
“However, combined with a number of experienced skaters having to take time out of training, this meant the majority of our team was inexperienced which effected our performance throughout the tournament.
“We still enjoyed playing every game and did so with a positive attitude and lots of determination, but it unfortunately meant we were moved to Tier Five for 2016.
“We have been training hard together for the last few months and have really seen an improvement in everyone individually as well as together as a team so we are very excited to make an impression in Tier Five and hopefully get promoted back up to Tier Four next year.
“We are entering this year again not really knowing any of the teams so we are also looking forward to meeting and getting to know new leagues. This year there is a lot more traveling as we will compete against Reaper Roller Derby (Swansea), Cheshire Hellcats Roller Derby, Wakey Wheeled Cats Roller Derby (Wakefield), Neath Port Talbot Roller Derby and Bedfordshire Roller Derby.
“We are proudly hosting the first double header of the 2016 Tier Five British Championships, and also our first home bout of the season.”
Wiltshire’s campaign begins on Saturday, February 13th at Futsal Swindon with doors open at 12pm.
Kicking off the new season will be Bedfordshire v Neath Port Talbot before Wiltshire then take to the floor against Reaper (Swansea).
