Wiltshire Roller Derby were pipped to the title in their final British Championship match against Neath Port Talbot but are still hopeful of gaining promotion.

A 192-117 loss against the Welsh side saw Wiltshire finished in second place in Tier Five although that should be good enough to secure promotion back to Tier Four.

Wiltshire must now play a waiting game to see if the league choose to promote them.

Both sides began the match strongly in this title decider which saw the only two undefeated teams in the league go head to head.

Neath Port Talbot established an early lead after playing a great tactical game to thwart the Wiltshire jammers.

Wiltshire ensured they kept the score to within four points of their rivals while both jammers were struggling to score points, with both side’s blockers doing their jobs superbly.

A series of good rounds from Neath Port Talbot however saw them jump into a 30-point lead and they led 99-61 at the break.

The second half saw Neath Port Talbot create the chances for their jammer to run up and smash through the Wiltshire walls as they increased their lead further.

Despite a superb effort by Wiltshire, Neath Port Talbot showed their strength to clinch victory 192-117 and in turn the title of Tier Five Champions.

Wiltshire’s Nicola Botley hailed a great season for the side, saying: “I am so proud of how well our team has played in this year’s Championships.

“Having finished in last place last year in Tier Four and getting demoted, coming second place this year is a great feeling and has made all the hard work we have put in worth it.

“It was so much fun playing Neath in our final game because it was clear they were going to be our strongest opponents and was our most anticipated game so it was a great challenge.

“We have won five out of six games this year, both in and out of Champs, with the biggest point differentials in WRD’s history so I’m really excited to see what the rest of the year holds for us.

“We are keeping our fingers crossed that we will be promoted back up to Tier Four next year where the games will be much harder, but we won’t hear that news for a while yet.”

Wiltshire Roller Derby are always looking for new members to join this exciting full contact sport, especially men to help grow their men’s team.
