Swindon Town Ladies got their Women’s Premier League Division One South West season off to a flyer by comprehensively beating Southampton Saints 5-1.
Both of Swindon Town Ladies’ summer signings Alex Hurst and Abby Picton were also on target in what was a superb performance at Shrivenham Football Club’s Barrington Park, their new home for the 2015-16 season.
Northern Ireland international Hurst, signed from Bristol Academy, grabbed a fine double with Picton, who joined Town Ladies from Cardif Met, adding one goal.
But it was Ellie Maynard who got Town Ladies’ season up and running with an early strike.
Meg Vella doubled Town’s advantage before Hurst grabbed the first of her goals just before half-time.
After the break Hurst made it 4-0 as she cut in from the left to coolly slot the ball into the Southampton net before Picton made it five, blasting home a loose ball.
Town Ladies’ winning margin could have been greater but for some heroics in the Southampton goal from keeper Hannah Haughton and the woodwork denying the home side further goals.
And instead of adding to their tally, Town conceded late on as Becki Bath sneaked through the home defence to slot past Robyn Levett.
Next weekend Town travel to St Nicholas where they will hope to continue their fine start to the season.
