Swindon Shock are back in the play-off hunt following an impressive 87-77 win against top of the table side Cardiff Archers in the South West League.
The victory makes it three wins in a row for Shock, adding to their impressive home form of seven wins in eight.
Needing a victory to stay in the play-off race, Shock jumped out to a 20 point lead, led by former Archers player Lee Hobbis who scored 17. Matt North matched Hobbis’ efforts with 17 and Mantas Kmita added 24 further points.
Cardiff would not go down without a fight and a full court defensive press cut into Shock’s lead.
JJ Royal, Matic Iskra, and Pawel Zakorska provided key defensive steals and baskets that gave the home side breathing space moving into the final quarter.
Despite a few players battling illness, the last five minutes had Shock’s veteran players taking over the game late to ensure the Swindon side were victorious.
Although being outscored by five points in the final quarter, Shock held firm under Cardiff’s pressure and late free-throws by point guard David Colclough and centre Matt Ford sealed the win.
Next up for Shock are Birmingham City in what is a crucial match for play-off control on the road.
