Swindon St George’s first team secured their place at next weekend’s season finale by beating Bristol Sonics 42-22 at Supermarine Rugby Club on Saturday.

It took St George just two minutes to get some points on the board when Ashley Perry cut in from the left to cross the Bristol whitewash with Connor Tomley adding the conversion.

Richard White then powered over just three minutes later with Tomley’s boot again securing the extra two points.

Liam Rowe, and Tomley with the conversion again, put Swindon 18-0 up before Bristol could find a response.

Bristol hit back on 25 and 30 minutes as they added two converted tries to close the gap to just six points.

Swindon then added two more tries, with Tomley’s boot faultless again with the extras, as St George increased their lead to 18 points at the break.

Bristol responded again on the hour thanks to an unconverted try before pulling another six points back soon after.

Swindon though were not about to throw their big chance of reaching the grand final away with Sam Williams and Ash Brown both running in tries converted by Tomley.

St George will now face Portsmouth next Saturday at Chippenham Rugby Club in the West of England Grand Final.

Head coach Ben Whincup was delighted with his side’s performance saying: “I’m delighted to see the boys triumph but even more pleased with the display.

“A lot of hard work went into that performance and that was the best 80 minutes I’ve ever seen from a Swindon side.

“Bristol are a quality outfit and this was our first-ever victory over them.”
