The event itself, which took place at Greenbridge Road, the home of Swindon Rugby Club, was raising funs for the charity Brighter Futures.

Bright Futures is a registered charity for the Great Western Hospital Radiotherapy Appeal, launched to bring cancer care closer to Swindon.

Currently Swindon cancer patients have to make the 70-plus mile journey to Oxford or Bath to receive life-saving radiotherapy treatment.

The appeal needs to raise £2.9 million to equip the new centre with two linear accelerators – the equipment used to provide this treatment.

Organiser of the rugby event, Chloe Thomas, was delighted with how the day went, saying: “Despite the weather I was overwhelmed with the support received from the players and club.

“We managed to raise £550 and the rugby club have kindly donated an extra £100 taking the day’s total to £650 which is a fantastic amount.

“Stall holders gave up their time to sell goodies and The Laylow Band also gave us three hours which really lifted the mood with the horrible weather!”
