Scrappers Gym needs local support for funding boost

Scrappers Gym in Swindon has been selected in a funding community voting competition with Aviva to win up to £25,000.

The money would go to a project which would enable the gym to install a shower block and disabled toilets.

Scrappers Gym is Swindon’s only charity and community gym and is accessible to all members of the public including children, young people, adults and people with disabilities.

It celebrated it sixth anniversaty November 8 and the project is managed by the Swindon Children’s Scrapstore, a local registered charity, community resource centre and social enterprise.

They are asking service users and the general public to vote for the project to help them reach the final round as projects with the most votes are selected.

Olivia McCann, Scrapstore CEO, said: “The Aviva grant will improve access to Scrappers Gym for people with disabilities and provide washing and toilet facilities enabling all our service users to have a shower at the gym following their sessions, benefitting thousands of children and adults in Swindon each year.

“Please vote for Scrappers Boxing Gym & Community Fitness Centre so we can make a difference in our community.”

Scrappers Gym was set up in 2011 and is located at the rear of the 24HR Gym in Hillmead, West Swindon.

The gym has supported more than 15,000 children and adults in Swindon in the past six years.

Many of the service users have physical disabilities, learning difficulties and mental health problems.

The project helps to provide social and personal benefits and improves their health and well-being increasing their fitness, confidence and self-esteem.

Scrappers Gym is run by qualified boxing coaches with a wealth of experience and knowledge, the Head Boxing Coach Paul Rogers a former Multi-Nations Silver Medalist and Swindon’s first ABA Champion.

Rogers is supported by a team of 12 regular volunteers who dedicate their time to help others less fortunate than themselves.
