Swindon St George 1sts are in quiet, confident mood heading into their local derby with the Oxford Cavaliers this Saturday afternoon (1pm) at The Swindon Supermarine Sports Ground, writes Nick Taylor.
Having beating the Bristol Sonics 21-20 two weeks previously with a dramatic last minute Sam Williams drop goal in what was a heated, physical match played in awful weather conditions, head coach Ben Whincup is again expecting a tough battle against their neighbours from down the A420.
The Cavaliers have been training alongside their National League 1 semi-pro side and Whincup is anticipating another fierce encounter.
“After our fantastic victory against Bristol, this Saturday will again be a tough one against a well-drilled, well-organised side,” he said.
“The Cavaliers recently lost to Bath but I don’t read much into that.
“They won the Plate last year, so they’ll certainly give us a game.”
Whincup doesn’t know exactly what side the Cavaliers will turn up with, as Saturday’s opponents have the luxury of calling on the odd player or two from their semi-pro set-up side in Oxford.
St George will be without the services of Rob Currie and Jerome Davies, both due to work commitments, but ex-Cavalier Richard White (Prop) is expected to play against his former side.
