RUGBY LEAGUE: Robinson set to face former side

Following on from the first team fixture, Swindon St George’s 2nd side take on the Gloucester Warriors (3pm) in what coach Matt Robinson is expecting to be a closely contested game, writes Nick Taylor.

With both sides having tasted defeats in their opening fixtures, Robinson is hopeful that his side will be the ones claiming the much needed league points come the final whistle.

In their opening fixture of the season, Swindon St. George 2nds were soundly beaten by visitors, Cheltenham Phoenix, 16-60.

Then, two weeks ago, Robinson’s side were trounced 16-58 away at Somerset Vikings, in a game in which Swindon admirably held their own up until the half time break, despite travelling with a weakened squad of only 15 available players.

Despite these two heavy defeats in what’s been a “baptism of fire” for the 2nd string in their inaugural season in the league, coach Robinson remains optimistic for a positive outcome this Saturday.

“We’re expecting a hard, close game,” he said.

“Having coached them myself last season I know what to expect.

“We have been working hard in training and we have to play smart rugby, stick to our game plan and pay particular attention to their flying full back, Ash Lewis, who is their outstanding individual.”

Swindon St George v Oxford Cavaliers kicks off at 1pm, with the 2nds v Gloucester Warriors following on afterwards from 3pm.

Both games are being held at the Swindon Supermarine Sports Ground.
