Wrag Barn’s Matt Mumford has won the prestigious Stiff Salver at The Players Club on Saturday.

Mumford, who is in his first year as a professional, shot a one-over par score of 73, just one shot shy of the course record which is held by Sky Sports golf pundit John Morgan.

The Stiff Salver is an open competition for amateurs and professionals to take on the 7,716 yard Championship Course at The Players Club.

With just five holes to play, Mumford was three under par and looking in great shape to beat the course record.

However, the Wrag Barn professional found the water on the par five 15th which resulted in him only making double bogey.

Another bogey on the 17th saw his chances of breaking the course record all but disappear but his superb round of 73 was three shots clear of the rest of the 104 field of which just six players managed to keep their score in the 70’s.

A delighted Mumford told Your Sport Swindon: “Obviously I’m really pleased about winning the Stiff Salver.

“The course measured at just over 7,700 yards and had two par 5s both over 650yards.

“I’ve been working harder than ever on my game and it’s nice to get back to winning ways at the Stiff Salver tournament.

“I look forward to using my recent win as a confidence boost ahead of the next few weeks where I play three more Jamega tour events before ending my season.”
