Jack Seaman banished thoughts of a disappointing season by winning Wrag Barn’s club championships at the weekend.
Following a frustrating season which has seen the 19-year-old miss most of the year through illness, Seaman described his success as something of a “relief”.
The 0.8 handicapper clinched victory on the very last hole, sinking a seven foot putt, for a 36-hole gross score of 148, to pip Max Drayton by a single shot.
“Winning this championship is a big thing for me,” Seaman told Your Sport Swindon. “Firstly because it is my first club championship win and also because I’ve had a season full of disappointment due to being ill for the majority of the season.
“So to finally win something is a relief and it really does mean a lot to me.
“I have to say “well played” to my good friend, Max Drayton, who played great all day and is in some great form at the moment and it’s good to see him playing so well.”
Seaman’s championship started with a blip as he bogeyed the second before bouncing back with birdies at the fourth and ninth to make the turn in 35.
Birdies at 10 and 12 took Seaman to three under par but 13 was unlucky for him as he ended up with a triple bogey.
The youngster’s first round eventually saw him finish with a two over par 74 but still in contention for the title with Drayton just two strokes ahead.
Seaman was one over par through four holes in the second round before a birdie on the fifth saw him tied for the lead.
But bogeys at the ninth and 13th saw him drop back again until he birdied the 14th after hitting his 120-yard fairway bunker shot to within a couple of feet of the hole.
A double bogey on 15 then threatened to dash Seaman’s title hopes as he was once again tied with Drayton for the lead.
But after Drayton missed his birdie putt at 16, Seaman sunk his to retake the tournament lead.
Seaman then birdied 17 after nailing his 90-yard pitch shot to just a couple of feet for a simple birdie putt before experiencing a nervous moment at 18.
Down the final hole, Seaman found himself needing a green side bunker shot for par. But after hitting a good bunker shot to within seven feet, Seaman held his nerve to sink the winning putt.
Seaman was delighted to keep his cool on the 18th although he did admit he thought he was putting to force a play-off, saying: “I thought I had that putt for a play-off but after I holed it I was told it was actually for the win!”
Picking up second place was Drayton (72, 77) while Tom Walsham was third with rounds of 78 and 72, which was also enough for him to win the nett title with a score of 132
