It was a great win for Swindon against a Cheltenham side fancied to challenge for the title this season.

There were debuts for Emily Arrell and Megan Poole and both adjusted to the step up in level well.

Swindon, who have lost several key players to university hockey, started well and pressured the Cheltenham defence from the off.

Cheltenham though were dangerous on the break and Swindon keeper pulled off several vital saves while Lynsey Wall also produced a superb goal-line clearance.

The second half saw Swindon back on the attack but green cards to Gemma Scrase and Chloe Lewis saw the home side reduced to nine players.

Despite the disadvantage, Swindon’s defence held firm and then scored the winning goal from a short corner.

Chloe Lewis controlled the short corner well before slipping the ball to Shona O’Dwyer who smashed a deflected shot into the Cheltenham net.

The last 10 minutes were tense but Swindon defended superbly to clinch the points.

Matchwinner O’Dwyer was delighted with the win, saying: “We all knew today instinctively what each other were doing today, we had each other’s backs and were always giving an option.

“It’s a fantastic start to the season and I can’t wait to be involved in many more victories this year.”
