Swindon trainer Paddy Fitzpatrick talks to us about Luke Watkins’ recent points success against Tony Cruise and what lies ahead for his boxer.
Fitzpatrick insists he is still in no rush for Watkins to fight for a title, adding he is in “an excellent position” in his quest to one day become world champion.
“Duke” Watkins is set to return to action at York Hall on July 16th although Fitzpatrick told us he may also fight in June. After that, a September bout is likely before the pair begin to look at a potential title shot.

Fitzpatrick also described the win against Cruise as a superb learning fight and he always expected the bout to go the distance.
And while he accepts that Watkins, aged 26, is still in the “learning stage” of his career he would be comfortable with his boxer taking on those immediately above him in the British cruiserweight rankings.
Fitzpatrick also revealed the obvious route of Southern, English, British and European title fights is not necessarily the path Watkins will take to earn a world title shot.
