Jamie Cox’s trainer John Costello talks to Your Sport Swindon after his boxer won the WBO European super middleweight title on Friday night.

Costello’s Swindon boxer Cox claimed the European strap after stopping Blas Miguel Martinez in two minutes 14 seconds at Wembley Arena.

The Birmingham-based trainer now believes Cox is ready to take on the best in the world and says he would relish a fight against the likes of George Groves and Arthur Abraham.

Groves, who is managed by Cox’s former trainer Paddy Fitzpatrick, is due to fight Badou Jack for the WBC strap later this year although a date has yet to be confirmed.

And Costello told Your Sport Swindon that Cox would be ready to fight Groves “tomorrow”.

Costello also went on to admit that if 28-year-old Cox fails to win a world title during his career then he will have “failed him as a trainer”.

Cox’s sensational performance against Martinez on Friday night saw the Swindon southpaw claim his 19th straight professional win.

It was also his second successive first round stoppage after finishing off Alistair Warren in similar style back in February.

The victory will also give Cox a much needed world ranking as took a huge step closer to a shot at a world title.

Although Cox and Costello would love a shot at a world title next, it is likely that the Frank Warren promoted boxer will instead defend his newly acquired European title in September or October.

Cox’s latest performance will also put him in contention to fight for the WBA belt which will be contested by champion Fedor Chudinov and Frank Buglioni on September 26.
