Jamie Cox was crowned the new WBO European super middleweight champion tonight, after stopping Blas Miguel Martinez in the first round.

The undefeated 28-year-old secured his 19th career win in fantastic style, eventually stopping Martinez, who weighed in eight pounds over the super middleweight limit, with a vicious right to the body in just two minutes 14 seconds.

Cox made a great start to the fight, shaking Martinez early in the first round with a vicious straight left.

But it was Cox’s fine work to the body which caused most of the damage to Martinez and when the Swindon southpaw landed a huge right hook to the body, his rival sunk to the floor.

Although Martinez appeared ready to fight on after beating the count, his corner decided enough was enough and threw the towel in.

Cox will now set his sights at a world title shot, potentially against interim WBA world title champion Dmitry Chudinov.
