Swindon powerlifter Charlie Shotton-Gale won gold while three of her fellow Swindon Barbell Club teammates also medalled at the British Powerlifting Championships.

While Shotton-Gale was crowned British champion in the 84kg seniors category, Yasmina Couty (63kg ladies) and Helen Toms (84kg masters) won silver and Christie Civetta (84 kg seniors) won bronze.

Shotton-Gale was competing in her ninth British Championships with the target of breaking some of her existing British records but instead the Swindon powerlifting star came home a champion.

After a 215kg smooth squat added 2.5kg to her British record, Shotton-Gale went on to add 5kg to her British bench record, increasing it to 137.5kg. She then increased her deadlift record by 2.5kg to 202.5kg.

Those lifts saw Shotton-Gale take her total to 555kg, a 15kg increase on her personal best and a new British record.

Couty, who was entering the competition as a practice run for some technical changes she has made in training, ended up with an unexpected silver medal.

She added 5kg to her personal best squat and 2.5kg to her deadlift as she finished with the second highest total in the 63kg ladies class.

In just her second competition with full powerlifting equipment, Toms won silver. After getting through some early nerves, Toms added 5kg to her personal best bench and the same for the deadlift giving her a total of 140kg squat, 75kg bench and 155kg deadlift.

Civetta, who is originally from America, only turned a senior this year so this competition hit her with many firsts.  Nevertheless, she turned her nerves into determination and missed none of her nine attempts achieving a 190k squat, 107.5k bench and 172.5k deadlift. Adding 25kg to her personal best saw Civetta scoop the bronze medal.

Swindon Barbell have a busy calendar in the coming months taking members to the British Masters Championships, the South West Championships as well as Charlie Shotton-Gale gearing up for the European Championships in May.
