Two members of Swindon Martial Arts Centre have been crowned British champions.

Swindon duo Tom Banks and Jason O’Grady were on top form at the WAKO (World Association of Kickboxing Organisation) British Championships in Birmingham, winning the 79kg and veterans 84kg titles respectively.

Banks was first up for the Swindon club in the 79kg category and cruised into the quarter final before facing tough rival Alex Barrowman in the semi-finals.

He stayed in front of Barrowman at all times, controlling the fight and comfortably booked his place in the final against Manchester’s John Firth.

Banks though kept his cool in the final, delivering yet another great performance to win the British crown.

O’Grady was next up in the 84kg veterans section and he too cruised into the quarter final stages.

He then faced reigning world champion Darrell Mayweather and after a close fight, pulled away in the closing moments to clinch the win.

In the final, O’Grady faced Jason Morrison from Bolton, who bossed the opening round of the bout.

A change of tactics from O’Grady though worked as he produced the better work in the remaining rounds to clinch the title.
